Australia and Southern Pacific
Mothers’ Union members across these islands support the most vulnerable in their community through practical and pastoral care. Training programmes for members are organised regularly to ensure that members are equipped to carry out their roles within Mothers’ Union and the members themselves run workshops for the youth with a particular focus on social issues and concerns.
Mothers’ Union members in St Lucia regularly visit the housebound and sick members of the community, taking with them small hampers with appropriate gifts according to the needs of the person they are visiting.
Mothers’ Union Grenada is actively involved in promoting education for young people, especially girls. One Mothers’ Union group awards scholarships each year to five girls from disadvantaged homes in order to enable them to complete their secondary school education. Within the Church, Mothers’ Union members assist the clergy in preparing children for baptism and confirmation.
Particularly exciting for Mothers' Union in the Windward Islands was the introduction of the Mothers’ Union Worldwide Parenting Programme in 2011. A week-long training of 15 facilitators was held with participants representing three islands from the region. The training went well and all the facilitators, including one male facilitator, left the training eager to start their first parents’ group within their local community.
