Celebrating Mary Sumner Day
Today, 9th August, is Mary Sumner Day; a very special day to our members, friends and supporters as it celebrates the life and work of our founder. This year, we also mark 140 years since Mary Sumner humbly began a movement with a mission to promote conditions for stable family life and the protection of children.
Now working in 83 countries around the world, Mothers’ Union continues its vital work in many different forms. The vision now positively benefits the lives of over 500,000 people each year worldwide.
Mary Sumner Day will be celebrated across the membership and supporters internationally, as has become one of the most significant dates in many Anglican calendars.
We are so pleased that celebrations this year have already been heavily featured on social media, has been covered by the BBC in Britain and celebration services are being held as far from London office as Australia and Anguilla (West Indies). The culminates in Westminster Cathedral, very near to Mary Sumner House, where over 400 members will be gathering for Evensong to mark the day.
Mothers’ Union Chief Executive Beverley Jullien said of this special day “Mary Sumner remains today such an inspirational figure. My thoughts and prayers are with all who are having special services – and I very much look forward to the privilege of celebrating with members today in Westminster Abbey”.
