Two Mothers’ Union members in Ely Diocese have had their community volunteering recognised by the Diocese of Ely.

Beryl Watson and Ros Wright were both awarded St Ethelreda Medals by the Bishop of Ely, the Rt Revd Stephen Conway in a special service held at Ely Cathedral recently.

Beryl received her medal in recognition of her many years of membership and outreach as a member of Mothers’ Union. Diocesan President for the past six years, Beryl was one of the first people in Ely Diocese to become an accredited parenting facilitator for Mothers’ Union’s Passionate About Parenting programme.  Since accreditation she has run many courses in the community and helped to train a team of volunteers to work with her.   Beryl has also been an active volunteer prison visitor at Littlehey including evolving a relationship skills course to run with prisoners. Beryl also leads baptism classes, bible studies and Godly play in the prison, as well as organising coffee mornings for prisoners who never have visitors. Speaking about her prison volunteering with Mothers’ Union back in 2009 Beryl said

“It is a huge time commitment for me – but I think it is one of the most wonderful things I’ve done in my life. By bringing about this positive change, and helping faith develop in the chapel life, I’ve come to a deeper understanding of Christ in my own life.”

Ros Wright

Member and Diocesan Secretary for Ely Diocese, Ros Wright, was also presented for a medal in recognition and thanks for her contribution both to Mothers’ Union and the Diocese.  Ros has worked tirelessly for Mothers’ Union in the Ely Diocese, as well as actively volunteering in her own parish church.  Within the diocese Ros has for years run the box office for Rave in the Nave, an event run for youth leaders and young people which has engaged over 18,000 young people in 23 years discussing faith and church.  Ros has a passion for making the Christian faith living and accessible. Within Ely Cathedral she helped develop interactive “stations” which help people engage with the Christmas and Easter Stories.

Congratulations, and our overwhelming thanks, to Beryl and Ros for all they do.
