MU puts Fashion @the heart of the Community

Saturday 22nd April saw the first ever Mothers’ Union “Fashion @the Heart of the Community” event in Broadstairs, Kent where the team raised over £2500 for their diocese AFIA fund. The event saw over 500 hundred visitors turn out to browse a number of stalls, grab a bargain on pre-loves clothes, be entertained by some fantastic dance and music and try their luck at a raffle with some excellent prizes.

The highlight of the event was the fashion parade with competitive categories such as including best individual model and best group performance! Partners for this ‘catwalk’ event with a twist showcased a wealth of creative talent by fielding models and outfits that reflect their work and their membership. Partners include the Broadstairs Town Shed, the Gap Community Project, East Kent College, Sea Scouts, Brownies and Wisewoods Dance School. Judges included our very own Chief Executive Bev Jullien as well as Kent College Thanet Campus principle, Paul Manning and Councillor Iris Johnson. Bev said of the event “Over the last 140 years, Mothers’ Union has been putting Faith into Action globally. However, in order to be successful, we are dependent on innovation and action at local level. This is a great example of how local mums can come together to create a fundraising event that doesn’t just raise charitable funds but connects people from all walks of life.”

Madeline White, Project Lead for the event said regarding the success of the day; “We’re absolutely delighted, we aimed to raise £2,500 and we thought we’d get 300-400 people but we had a footfall of over 500. It was all about bringing the community together and it was great to see people walking off the street to come and join in”.

The Fashion @the heart of the community was a multigenerational effort and the team and all those involve hope it will inspire other dioceses and branches. There are also plans that this may become an annual event which would be fantastic! Congratulations to all the team who worked so hard to make the day such a success.
