Supporting Families in Faith
Mothers’ Union works in many practical ways to support family life. As a Christian charity this includes helping families to explore and enjoy faith together. Sometimes faith becomes important to people when they have their own children, even if not before. Our members are involved in various ways of supporting parents in this aspect of family life. For example, some of our members who run parents' groups include a session on faith in the family alongside other topics.
We get involved when families come to church for the baptism of their children. Some of our members become involved with the families before the service and keep in touch with them afterwards, inviting them to church activities like toddler groups and parent events.
We have also produced Baptism - a Resource for Parents as an information resource for families considering having their child baptised.
Hand in Hand
Hand in Hand is a short booklet, created by Mothers' Union, to help families include faith as a natural part of their life together. Alongside the booklet, which can be ordered from us, we have downloadable sheets with ideas and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Hand in Hand booklets can be given as presents for baptismal families. They can also be used as part of a session to help baptismal families understand more about their role in encouraging faith in their children.
Families & Church
Our Families & Church series is a set of leaflets which focus on different aspects of family life and the part the church can play in these. The first two topics are: Helping children through bereavement (which is an updated version of the Children & bereavement leaflet) and Celebrate with us – ideas to celebrate with the church family throughout the year. The series will be added to in time. Each leaflet includes helpful information and practical advice and they also recommend further resources. You can order the Families & Church leaflets from us.
Some Mothers’ Union groups get involved with Messy Church. This is a time for families in church and includes a meal, activities on a Bible theme and a short praise time in which the whole family can take part.
